Storr Footpath
Problem 1
Here heavy user numbers have damaged both sides of the path with path material migrating into the peat along the lower edge and the sub base of the path beginning to appear.
Repair work involved lining each edge with stone, adding a new layer of surfacing to the path and installing deeper ditches closer to the path.
Problem 2
In this section the problem was again users trampling on the ground either side of the path but unlike the previous example there was no boulders nearby to either strengthen the edge or block the trampled sides.
We decided to transplant rushes that were growing nearby to the path verge and they have indeed proved a very effective measure to keeping the user within the pathline.
Some of the more technical aspects of this work is undertaken by experienced upland path workers but a great deal has been achieved by supervised voluntary work. If you would like to find out more as to how you could get involved please click onto our contacts page.
