17. Falls of Glomach
One of the highest waterfalls in Britain, 113m (370 ft), set in a steep narrow cleft in remote country, this route is very popular with tourists in the summer. The walk in is long with a series of ascents and descents.
Some of the steeper sections were in a poor state of disrepair and characterised by deep gullied sections where path materials had been washed away during periods of heavy rainfall. The resulting uneven and closed in nature of the walking surface resulted in alternative lines beginning to develop.
The work, undertaken in different phases between 1993 and 1998 involved installing cross path drainage, preventing further washout and stabilising the path at high gradient using stone anchor bars to hold the path material in place. Short sections of solid stone pitching were installed where the path was to steep for any other type of repair.
