Sticking to the line
Pressure caused by heavy user numbers on our mountain access paths has caused extensive damage, especially over soft peaty areas and the erosion can be severe as walkers move out to avoid the damaged areas. Surrounding vegetation is damaged and the shallow soils underneath, now exposed, are washed away by the heavy periods of rain during the winter.
The original line must be well defined and easy to negotiate, and the alternative routes that have developed blocked and landscaped out. Pits are then opened up close to the work site to provide hardcore for the base of the path and surfacing for an even finish. The pits are then carefully landscaped in. The path must offer easier walking than the surrounding area
